May 17, Colombo: W.L. Siriwardhana, famously known as ‘Volleyball Sira ‘ of Gampaha, in Sri Lanka passed away at Colombo National Hospital on Saturday (May 15).

Mr. Siriwardhana was the captain of Sri Lanka’s national volleyball team for 12 years in 1960s and 70s. He was a local legend in a time volleyball was highly popular among Sri Lankans.

Volleyball is still the national game of Sri Lanka although it never reached to professional level while cricket surpassed it in professionalism and popularity.

Mr. Siriwardana was famous in the Asian region as a gifted dasher. He dedicated his entire youth for volleyball. His brother W.L. Piyarathna also captained Sri Lanka national volleyball team.

Later, he entered local government politics and served as a member of Gampaha Pradeshiya Sabha. He was a father of three and was 72 years old at the time of his death. His funeral will take place on Wednesday at Ihalagama, Gampaha.
